Summary
The next chapter is titled “racists.” Doyle begins this chapter with a description of how, when she began treatment for bulimia, her father walked out of a family counseling session. He was, Doyle says, too invested in being a good father to see even the possibility that he might have made some mistakes. Doyle then shifts focus, describing how, in the aftermath of Donald Trump becoming president, she started educating herself on issues associated with race in America, coming to realize that she was not as active in the fight against racism as she thought she was. So, she says, she educated herself, started training herself out of her old values and into new ones, and felt that the experience was similar to that of getting into recovery from alcohol addiction. She describes the experience as entering “racial sobriety” (210).
