Nineteen-year-old Black Shoeshine Man

The Tulsa Race Massacre was started when a 19-year-old Black man, employed as a shoeshiner, allegedly assaulted a White woman in an elevator. The man was put in jail after the alleged assault. Whites attempted to kill him before he was even sent to trial. It is not indicated what ultimately happened to the man.

Seventeen-year-old White Elevator Operator

This 17-year-old White woman who worked as an elevator operator was allegedly assaulted by a Black man when they were together in an elevator. It was this accusation of assault that started the Tulsa Race Massacre.
