Train Tracks
The train tracks are symbols of segregation. The Black and White neighborhoods and business areas of Tulsa were divided by railroad tracks. It is a visual symbol of the way Blacks were required to follow segregation laws restricting them to separate, and often substandard, facilities such as water fountains, bathrooms, and railroad cars.
Privately Owned Airplanes
Privately owned airplanes are symbols of wealth. It is noted that there were six privately owned airplanes in Greenwood. This suggests how financially well-off some of the Blacks were doing.
Bronze Statues
The bronze statues represent racial unity. The bronze statues in Reconciliation Park acknowledge what happened in the past. They also stand as a reminder that it is every person’s responsibility to reject hatred as we work toward a goal of racial unity.
