Summary

Since the Whites were not happy with the proof that Blacks could be just as successful, if not more successful, as Whites, their anger boiled over when a White teen girl accused a Black teen boy of assaulting her. An illustration shows a Black man stepping out of a dark space into a brightly lit elevator where the girl is standing.

Even though the Black boy was put in jail, a White-owned newspaper suggested that Whites should “nab” (12) him. About 30 Black men took guns and went to his rescue because they feared he would be hanged before he could even have a trial.

Ten White men and two Black men were killed when the Blacks were attacked by 2,000 White men. It is noted that the standoff took place on Memorial Day. The Whites started rumors that the Blacks were going to attack them...
