In the illustrated non-fiction book Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre, Carole Boston Weatherford tells the story of the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma. More than 100 years ago, Black families had created a thriving community for themselves in Greenwood with stores, movie theaters, fine homes, and a luxury hotel. A false claim about a Black man assaulting a White woman sparked jealousy and hatred that resulted in Whites setting fire to Greenwood and killing many of its residents. The book concludes with references to Tulsa’s Reconciliation Park, a landmark intended to encourage hope for unity and compassion.
