Willa Knox
Willa is a middle-aged woman with a background in publishing and higher education who lives with her husband in Vineland. As her home deteriorates around her, she begins searching for ways to have their home restored by the Vineland Historical Society, though her efforts are drawn-out throughout the entire novel.
Willa is forced to grapple with her differing expectations for her children when Zeke is the son who disappoints her and her vision for his future by proving unprepared to be a father to Dusty. Contrastingly, she is wowed by Tig's devotion to motherhood and her role as a caretaker for Nick.
Willa also explores her relationship with her husband, Iano, as she attempts to separate their connection from the physical foundations of their house and the life they have built there in order to strengthen their marriage through strife.
