Summary
In the historical timeframe, Thatcher slips into the crowded hall for a lecture by Professor Cutler. He is thoroughly unexcited, and travels to a local coffeehouse where he meets a man named Uri Carruth who begins talking about his children. They continue the conversation about their professions and their families. Uri reveals to Thatcher that he believes Thatcher’s feud with Professor Cutler may soon reach beyond the schoolhouse walls for he is attempting to thwart his rehiring. Thatcher assures Uri that he will not alter the content of his lectures. Back at home, Mary and Thatcher open the door of the carriage house so she can show him her collecting box.
