Summary
Flashing back to historical Vineland, Mary and Thatcher take the train to Batso to work on her new idea for a set of articles, “The Pines in All Seasons.” Thatcher reflects on Mary’s enthusiasm and drive, lamenting his own lack of ambition. He also thinks about Rose’s recent romantic attentions, likely with the goal of conceiving another baby.
Mary and Thatcher encounter Mr. Foggett who leads their horse-drawn carriage through the woods for deeper floral observations. Mary points out several natural items that can be used to make candles and other household goods. After a few miles, they arrive at the start of a dense cedar forest.
