Summary

The novel begins in the present-day community of Vineland, New Jersey. Willa Knox opens the novel in distress when her contractor tells her that the easiest way to repair her house would be simply to tear it down because it is currently in such poor condition. When Willa probes, he continues, saying that the house’s foundation is nonexistent. His assessment for the work necessary for repairs disheartens Willa. She explains that she was hoping to fix up some minor parts of the house before the family sells and downsizes, moving closer to Philadelphia. The contractor notes that her family seems too large to want to downsize, but she brushes him off. The two contemplate the current lack of money in the community compared to the origins of the town and the history of such large and beautiful homes. Willa promises to consider...
