Importance: Not long after Dot's death, Jeanie recalls a night that Julius threatened to abandon her for good. He was tired of being attached to and responsible for her and Dot, and irritated that Jeanie never helped with the financial burden. Recalling Julius's words from the past, makes Jeanie worry that now that Dot is dead, Julius will make good on his promise. Though Julius promises Jeanie nothing will change now that Dot is gone, her memory reveals the depth of Jeanie's fear, and her terror of being abandoned by the only person she trusts and loves.
