Jeanie Seeder
Jeanie Seeder is one of the main characters of the novel. In the narrative present, Jeanie is 51 years old, and living in the cottage where she was born and raised with her mother, Dot, and twin brother, Julius. After Dot dies suddenly in the middle of the night, Jeanie feels the foundation upon which she has built her life begin to crumble. Losing her mother means losing her constant companion, and her sense of stability and constancy. In the weeks and months following Dot's passing, Jeanie struggles to understand who she might be in the context of her fading past, and her ever-mutating present.
Though she is grateful for her mother's best friend Bridget's help and friendship, Jeanie often feels stifled in Bridget's company. Bridget judges Jeanie and Julius's insular lifestyle, and tries urging Jeanie towards creating a new life for herself. Rather than seeing Bridget's words...
