Summary

In Chapter 29, Jeanie searches the property in a panic. She fears Tom has shot Maude. Then she finds Julius, his "cheek and forehead...peppered with holes" (258). She blames herself for calling Julius home. She runs to the road, and sticks out her thumb. An old man gives her a ride to the police station. They send an ambulance to collect Julius.

Jeanie talks to the police. After she gives them a statement, they tell her that Julius is "having surgery at the John Radcliffe" (265). Bridget picks Jeanie up. Jeanie explains what happened, including Rawson's visit. Bridget knew about Dot's affair all along. They guess that Julius's aggressor was Tom.

In Chapter 30, at the hospital, the doctor talks to Jeanie and Bridget. Julius is in a "medically induced coma" (273). He lost an eye, and they were unable to remove the "shotgun pellets" from his...
