Summary
In Chapter 7, Bridget drives Jeanie to Devizes for the certificates. Jeanie tells Bridget about Caroline's visit. Bridget thinks it would be good for Jeanie and Julius to leave the cottage. They are both 51, and Bridget thinks it is "a bit unnatural" that they are still living together in the place they were born (63). Jeanie’s heart hurts.
Jeanie goes into the register office alone. She gets the forms, but feels uncomfortable answering the man's questions about burying or cremating Dot. She and Julius want to bury her in the yard. She is also unable to read and write the appropriate forms. Her childhood illness kept her from a proper education. Back at the cottage, Jeanie wonders what to do. She does not know if she is asking Dot's body or the dog, Maude (72).
