Summary
In “Big and Slow,” Gabbert found images of The Kelpies online. They are “two enormous steel horse-head sculptures” located “in a park in Scotland” (55). Although they are stationary, the sculptures “capture the essence of horses in movement” (55). For this reason, they appear “a little frightening” (55). Discovering The Kelpies led to Gabbert’s discovery of megalophobia, “the fear of large objects” (56). Although Gabbert does not have megalophobia, she began a “collection of megalophobia images” (57). Included in the collection was a photograph of the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota, “intended to dwarf nearby Mount Rushmore” upon its completion (57). Gabbert’s collection project begot her questions about fear and “aesthetic moods” (58). She wondered if people liked looking at such photos because they knew the objects could not harm them, although they were terrifying (58).
