Summary
In Chapter 8, "Justice Prevails," worrying about raising a child in Williamsburg, Deborah convinces Eli to move to Airmont, New York, where most of his family lives. Away from the gaze of Deborah’s family, life in Airmont affords her more independence. She gets her license, and begins driving to explore. She gets her hair colored and styled, hiding it beneath her wig. She and Eli decide to name the baby, Yitzhak Binyamin, a name with happy connotations.
Meanwhile, Deborah grows bigger, delighting in the baby's movements. What she hates is Eli's increased libido. He is delighted she is pure for nine months. Because masturbation is forbidden, Eli uses her for pleasure constantly. She feels like a sexual object.
One day, Eli insists she see a kabbalist. He tells Deborah, her baby's birth and the number nine will be significant to her. Deborah...
