Summary

Chapter 38 is an excerpt from Harold Baynes’s writings in which the pet bear Jimmie was given away to a zoo because he attacked Mrs. Baynes.

In Chapter 39, Auggie delivered his keynote speech at the “Heroes Against Heroin Spaghetti Banquet” (212). Auggie told about how he almost killed himself and how Clive saved him from certain despair by seeing him through rehab for the second time. Emma “hadn’t known how dark it had gotten” (216). Auggie encourages the parents of Everton to be more like Clive. At the end of the speech, Percy released a rooster to lighten the mood, and Rasputin leapt from Auggie’s bag and killed it onstage, to the delight of the audience.
