Summary
In Chapter 4, Peralta begins by describing how he and his family found a Catholic church, Resurrection, close to where they were living, and how he impressed the priest there, Father Michael, with his knowledge. He describes being baptized at that church, how he wanted Jeff to be his godfather, and how Father Michael was unsure because Jeff was Jewish. Eventually, though, he agreed. Peralta also describes how Mom became best friends with a woman named Carmen, whom she asked to be his godmother. He comments on how upset he was when Carmen commented on the differences in skin tone between him and Yando, implying that they were possibly fathered by different men. This leads him to a consideration of how the darkness of his skin upset him, leading him into longing for paler skin and curlier hair, like Yando’s.
