Summary
In Chapter 2, Peralta describes the several months of homelessness. First, he and his family were taken to an office to wait for a space in one of the city’s shelters to open up. They waited there for several days, and were eventually taken to a shelter on Catherine Street. They spent several months there, with Peralta’s mother being both careful and insistent that they eat as well as possible, take care of themselves in public rooms like the showers, and continue to do well in school. She also insisted that no-one else in their family know that they were in a shelter, which meant no visits with anyone and no revealing the truth to Dad when he called.
