Wallace's Office
Wallace's office is the opening setting of the novel that the reader only sees for one chapter. However, the rigid way Wallace runs his office as well as the obsessive way he thinks about his furniture and cleaning establishes his personality even before his argument with Patricia. To Wallace, the office is the pinnacle of productivity, intelligence, and ingenuity. His own office is meticulously taken care of and he strives to make everything function as perfectly as possible. It is not until after his death that Wallace realizes he ran his office like a dictator, and his exceedingly high standards caused terror and hatred rather than loyalty and effectiveness. When Wallace is given a second chance at life, he can never return to the office, signaling the fact that he has changed for the better and will not go back.
