Summary
The story opens in an unnamed rural town in the state of Florida. The narrator says that one of the residents is a mysterious man called Uncle Monday who practices mysterious magic such as hoodoo. The town only has 300 residents, and Uncle Monday has lived there for years. However, the other residents know virtually nothing about him. No one even knows his origins. He simply appeared in town one morning. He first appeared in the village in the late 1880s and has been living in the village for about 40 years. The first person in town to ever see him was a man named Joe Lindsay. Lindsay was setting up fishing lines on a nearby lake called Lake Belle, which is surrounded by marshes and unsavory creatures like leeches and snakes. The lake is also full of alligators.
