Summary
In Chapter 12, Mary has a doctor's appointment. The doctor orders additional tests but says Mary will probably never live on her own again. Over the course of their conversation, Mary answers some questions in a way that provides more information about her past. For example, she says that her father refused to talk to her after she gave birth to an illegitimate daughter. She clearly believes that Caroline is Pat. Caroline begs the doctor for help, citing how difficult it is to take care of Mary. Katie compares Caroline's words, pouring out all their family issues, to “chucking up on the man's carpet” (88). Katie is especially upset that Caroline is talking about Mary as if she is not in the room.
