Summary

In Chapter 37, narrated by Rachel in the present, Rachel is surprised when her husband, Brad, tells her that Miles is there to see her. Brad encourages Rachel to talk to Miles.

Miles tells Rachel he is not sure why he is there, but Rachel senses what he needs from her. Miles asks Rachel if she loves Brad like she loved him. She says that she does. He asks how she allowed herself to love again.

Rachel takes Miles’s hand and leads him to the nursery. She makes him walk to the crib and look at her daughter, Claire. Miles breaks down and returns to the hallway where he sits on the floor and cries. Rachel sits beside him. She apologizes for blaming Miles for what happened and explains that she did not know how to handle it.
