The Marquesas

The Marquesas are a group of islands in the South Pacific inhabited by Polynesian natives. These islands include the island of Nukuheva, which the French Navy is in the process of occupying.

The Island of Nukuheva, Nukuheva Bay

Nukuheva is a nearly round island of about twenty miles diameter that has mountains in the interior and several bays around the island. The best harbor is called Nukuheva, or Nukuheva Bay, and is where the narrator's ship, the USS Dolly stops. The interior of the island is mountainous and uninhabited, with the native population concentrated in several valleys by the sea.

The French Squadron, the French Navy

The French Squadron has taken control of Nukuheva Bay and is slowly in the process of occupying the rest of the island. The French navy also maintains a small force on land by Nukuheva Bay.
