Miss Goering's House
As a child, Christina Goering grows up in a palatial home just outside of New York City. After her parents' deaths, she inherits the home. In the narrative present, she continues living here by herself as a grown woman. After visiting with Miss Gamelon only two times, Miss Goering invites her to live with her, and Miss Gamelon accepts.
Not long later, however, Miss Goering decides to sell the estate. Miss Gamelon advises against, insisting that she is the worst person to own property. Miss Goering tells her companion that if she wants to find her own salvation, she must get rid of the home, and live in a place where she was not born. At the end of Chapter 1 she finalizes the sale.
