Summary

The next evening, Miss Goering told her friends she was returning to the mainland. Miss Gamelon thought it was a terrible idea. Arnold and Arnold's father insisted on accompanying her.

On the train, Arnold "felt terribly depressed" (179). He regretted upsetting Miss Gamelon, with whom he had recently become close.

Once they got into town, Arnold saw a basketball game, and insisted upon joining. Miss Goering and Arnold's father left him to play while they ventured off to the bar. At the bar, Miss Goering left Arnold's father in a booth, while she went over to Andy. He was annoyed, but when Miss Goering accepted his invitation to dance, his demeanor changed. He then demanded to know if he was the man she wanted (182). Feeling pressured, Miss Goering assented. Remembering Arnold's father, Miss Goering and Andy joined the booth.
