Summary

In Chapter 2, Mr. and Mrs. Copperfield arrived at the Panama harbor. Mrs. Copperfield was "glad to see land," as she found the sea boring, and "had a great fear of drowning" (37).

Mr. Copperfield insisted they stay at a cheap hotel. Mrs. Copperfield wanted to stay at the famous Hotel Washington, located "a few miles out of Colon" (39). Mr. Copperfield did not want to spend the money. Finally they arrived at a small, sinister hotel (41). Mrs. Copperfield was distraught. All she wanted in life "was to be happy" (42). She laid on the bed and took a rest, thinking about how little her husband knew about her past.

Later, the couple went for a walk. There were prostitutes at every door. They gave Mrs. Copperfield much attention. While Mr. Copperfield went exploring, Mrs. Copperfield accepted one of the women's offers into her room. They...
