The North Field

The two-headed calf spends his one night of life in the north field with his mother. North symbolizes truth, and due to the later focus on stars, suggests Polaris (the North Star). This star is used by many as a guiding light, and so the fact that the cow lives his one night of life in the north field shows that he has something to teach the reader.

Summer Night

Summer is typically associated with freedom and abundance. The calf born with two heads has neither of these things in the long run because he is fated to die and be put on display at a museum. But for this one night, he sees "twice as many stars as usual" (9). Though nighttime could suggest darkness and danger, here it offers the calf protection from the farm boys as well as the opportunity to stargaze.
