Messaline Hills, CA is where the characters of the novel reside. In general, it is unremarkable. Most of the action in the novel takes place here.

Messaline High School

Jack, Vi, and the other students in the novel attend Messaline High School. It is here that Jack is a football star, and Vi is a social outcast. The Twelfth Knight tournament and school dance happen at Messaline High School. When Jack creates a character in the gaming world, he puts the character in the Messaline colors symbolizing his loyalty to and identification with the school. For Jack, high school has been a positive place because he is so respected and admired there.
