Summary
Chapter 6 brings us through day one of the march. After an inspiring speech by Dr. King, a group of about 3,000 people leave the church singing “We Shall Overcome” (71). Lynda is excited and determined to show Governor Wallace her bandaged head and eye to prove how he had hurt her and the black community. While marching, they sing “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round” (72). Lynda observes how contrary to Bloody Sunday, this time, armed American soldiers are there to protect them, and the press broadcast the march to the whole world. Lynda is the youngest of the marchers.
They camp for the night and in Chapter 7 day two of the march begins (March 22, 1965) and Lynda turns 15 years old. Lynda sees three white National Guardsmen with their rifles pointed at her and starts screaming. These guards are there to protect the marchers, but the...
