Cochlear implants are a symbol of forced indoctrination into the hearing world. Deaf children like Charlie are notoriously forced into wearing implants by parents who are pressured into the practice by medical professionals who believe that ASL is an inferior language.

Sign-Name

Sign-names are a symbol of belonging in the Deaf community. When Deaf people first introduce themselves, they do so by spelling their names with the ASL alphabet. However, each Deaf person has a sign-name they use as shorthand. Sign-names are not chosen but given by another member of the Deaf community.

True Biz

True Biz is a symbol of authenticity. It is an ASL idiom that means "truthfully" or "real talk," and February has a rule at River Valley that any student who talks to her "true biz" will get a lesser punishment for misbehaving.
