Point of View

The novel is written in first person from the perspective of June, a girl whose father recently died and who is living in a terrible situation she has been keeping secret from everyone else. June's mother, Angela, does not take care of June's daily needs. June has become entirely dependent on Toby for food. June is reasonably honest with herself about the situation, but it seems she is not really aware of how serious it is until the day Toby forces Angela to confront him. In that scene, June is able to imagine how Toby sees Angela and June admits that it is more difficult for her to pretend everything is alright after that experience.
