Summary

The next chapter is titled “Summer Baskets.” Jenny and Ziggy return with a basket filled with vegetables from the garden. Jenny smears raspberry juice on Ziggy's cheek, like war paint, and adorns herself with scallions, pea vines, and marigolds, then dances Ziggy around the kitchen. June cannot imagine a mother like that and suddenly feels she does not belong here. Nana Jean realizes it and points out that Jenny and Ziggy are excluding June. When Jenny starts to dance again, Nana Jean stops her, repeating again that she is going to have a talk with June, then Jenny can “tell me about how I ruined your life” (243), but says they need breakfast first.

Nana Jean invites Jenny to say grace and she agrees, but says she will pray her way. She thanks God for the food, then launches into a tirade...
