Summary
Delia headed outside, where she used to play with Antonio when they were little. She noticed the lock to the door was broken. Looking at the doorway that led to the courtyard and the stairway that led to Caserta’s old apartment, Delia recalled a memory from forty years prior. Uncle Filippo held young Antonio over the fifth-floor staircase and threatened to Caserta that he would drop the child.
Delia returned to the sweet shop cellar and descended the stairs. She remembered Amalia and Caserta standing tall, entering and exiting the cellar, and admitted that the memory was not entirely accurate because the door was short and anyone would have had to bend to get through. Delia heard the children playing on the sidewalk outside spouting sexual innuendos and remembered herself repeating similar phrases to Antonio when she was their age. She confessed that...
