Summary
Delia and Polledro rode in a taxi together. During the ride, Polledro tried to excuse Caserta’s behaviors, saying that his father’s brain was diminishing with old age and Caserta really was a good man. While Polledro spoke, Delia caught a whiff of Polledro’s smell which reminded her of the old sweet shop Polledro’s grandfather owned, where they used to play together as children. Her memory of the shop was sensorially rich and she could visualize her father’s paintings which decorated the shop.
Polledro changed the course of his conversation and spoke about how Caserta kept asking for money from him, but he did not know what he could do about it since he could not kill his father. Delia said that he could. Then she saw herself in the mirror of the taxi, taking in her soaked dress and...
