Summary
In Chapter 5, Delia had trouble sleeping and kept envisioning Amalia on the ceiling. She dreamt of a memory: a basement where Delia would buy brown liquid soap for her mother. She began to dream multiple visions of Amalia at once, which confused her. She saw the fat man who sold her soap running his fingers through Amalia’s hair, while a man in a steamroller approached in the distance. A ringing telephone woke Delia up. Caserta had called for Amalia, giving instructions for her to leave her bag of dirty clothes on the top floor for him and that she would find a suitcase for herself there. When Delia revealed that Amalia was dead and it was Delia on the phone, he said Delia had something of his then left the phone without hanging up. Delia immediately called Uncle Filippo, who panicked.
