Summary

In Chapter 27, Gamache told the group that Castonguay had once been in AA with Thierry as his sponsor. Castonguay, however, had been unable to end his drinking habit. Lillian recognized Castonguay and showed him her portfolio even though Thierry had advised her not to do so.

Thierry admitted that he had believed Lillian had come to threaten Castonguay that she would ruin his career unless he represented her. Thierry believed Castonguay had killed Lillian in a rage.

Clara recognized that theory did not make sense because Castonguay was losing business. He would have wanted to sign Lillian to save himself. She theorized Lillian had promised a deal with Castonguay, but then had signed with Marois.

Gamache informed the members of the group Castonguay had not killed Lillian, but another one in their group had.
