Chapters 18-22 Summary
Chapter 18:
Plank drops a bombshell on Williams by saying that he is leaving the paper and Williams will be the new editor. Williams does not want the job. Plank convinces Williams to take the job with the understanding that Williams could assign himself the best stories. Williams considers it.
Williams expresses disbelief that Plank would go to work as a press secretary for Nicolae Carpathia. Plank is taken by Carpathia and the man's rapid rise to power. Williams is skeptical but Plank insists that Carpathia is the biggest and best thing the world has seen. Williams is facetious about Carpathia assuming world dominance and Plank says it is possible. Plank is most amazed that Carpathia is receiving the attention and power in spite of himself and that people are simply taken with Carpathia and his ideas. The men also discuss how...
