Summary

In Part XII, Joe had a dream that “he was dreaming” (91). In the dream, he went into the yard and studied the tree. He studied Big Meadow and the surrounding land. In the dream, he dozed off. He saw leaves and flowers. He saw hoof prints on the ground outside. When he saw “the tunnel to Common Dean,” he followed it (92). As he ran through the tunnel, the train rumbled overhead.

When he arrived at Common Dean, the moon was shining. He walked to Rough Hollow, and Well Meadow, to Big Sand Field, Little Sand Field, and Round Meadow. In Round Meadow, he climbed a hill where he heard a bone pipe playing. He called after the noise, but the player fled. He continued walking, through fields and over hills.
