Summary

In Part V, Joe visited the eye doctor. The doctor turned off the lights and told Joe to “look straight ahead” (33). The light he shone in Joe’s eyes hurt. Then he pulled “a metal frame” to his face and told Joe to read the letters on the chart (33). Joe read. When Joe read line after line, the doctor told him to write down the letters he saw. He told Joe they were not there. Joe was convinced there were two charts, but the doctor said there was one. Joe’s eyes were fine, but something was wrong with his sight (37).
