San Jose Mine

The San Jose Mine is near Copiapo, Chile, where the cave-in occurred in 2010. Though there were rules about safety protocols, the mine was out of compliance with many of those, including the lack of escape routes in the event of a cave-in. The mine was opened in the late 1800s. It descends to about 2,400 feet.

Copiapo

Copiapo is the larger town in Chile which is near the San Jose Mine cave-in.

Padre Negro

Padre Negro is one of the small neighborhoods near the San Jose Mine. Some of the miners lived there. The area was poor, and many of the miners felt they had no choice but to work at San Jose.

Saint Lawrence

Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of miners, which is one of several symbols of the importance of religion as the families prayed for the trapped miners.
