Summary

Author Marc Aronson described the moment Raul Villegas was driving a truck 1,800 feet below the surface of the San Jose Mine when he felt the wave of an explosion. On the surface, he reported the sound and dust cloud. His bosses ordered him to drive back down. At around 1,200 feet, Villegas encountered a blockage.
The next subsection is titled 9:00 PM. Six men trained to deal with mine emergencies went back down into the mine. The final subsection is titled 6:00 AM. “The exhausted rescue crew returned … alone” (3).
