Faye

Faye is the novel’s main character and is the person who is undergoing transit as she transitions to her new life in her new home, as a divorced woman with two children. As a result of her divorce, Faye has taken a passive stance in life, giving her builders the power to solve issues with her basement neighbors, and eliciting stories from others with lessons that she hopes to apply to her own life.

At the beginning of the novel, Faye has hope that things are about to change in her life when she receives an email saying that she is about to go through a period of transit. The fact that she pays to learn more, even though she thinks that the message was computer generated, shows how much she hopes that she can move beyond her current situation.
