Summary
In Chapter 18, Gifty recalls church services during childhood. Pastor John would invite anyone in the congregation who wished to be saved to come to the front of the church. In the present timeline, one of Gifty's mice died and she grieved. At home, her mother asked for a glass of water and then told her she needed to fix her hair.
In Chapter 19, Gifty remembers a poetry course she took at Harvard and how she tried to write a letter to her mother but failed to express what she wished to convey. She recalls sitting in on youth group sessions at church with Nana, run by Pastor Tom (aka “P.T.”). Nana asked P.T. if people living in a remote village in Africa who had never heard of Jesus Christ were going to hell and P.T. said yes.
