Summary

In “Chapter 7” as Maggie and Kai are about to leave, Maggie is approached by two members of the Citizens’ Watch and Guard, the Law Dogs, including one she knows that dislikes her, Longarm. Finding the head in the truck, they claim it is human and ask her why she has a human head. Kai intervenes, offering his hand to shake and the men draw their guns. Kai lies, telling Longarm he had heard of him and that he was spoken highly of. Flattered, Longarm lets them go and they drive out of town.

In “Chapter 8”, they come across a coyote which Maggie tells Kai is a bad omen. Maggie tells Kai about the refineries 200 miles from the western side of the wall, expressing surprise that after the Energy Wars, people still exploit resources. Kai tells her of the water barons in the Burque...
