Summary
In Chapter 9, John now sees fear in the doe as he pursues her. It takes him ninety minutes to cover the same amount of ground the doe covers in just under nine minutes. John catches up, but the doe takes off once more. As the sun begins to sink, John rests for a bite to eat. He then continues on. The night comes on quickly, but John is not afraid as his grandpa has taught him well. However, he leaves his rifle behind and continues to pursue the deer. The gun suddenly means only death to John, and it does not seem to fit with him, the doe, the night, or the tracks.
