Betrayal
Betrayal is one of the primary themes within the novel. From the beginning, it is clear Marshall Cross has been betraying his daughter since birth. Through the novel, readers learn Marshall has lied about her mother being dead, hidden his true position with the Denazen company, lied about his job and his life, and even betrayed Dez before birth, as he selfishly injected her mother with a solution that could make Dez's power stronger, or could kill her. Marshall Cross betrays everyone, including Sueshanna, his wife, as he uses her to produce Dez, and then imprisons her for his own use. It is only fitting that Dex betrays her father, then, by lying to him his whole life about her powers, and by using Kale to help bring down his organization at the end of the novel.
