Tess
Tess Brooks is the 11-year-old main character and narrator of the novel. Tess is bright, optimistic, kind, and deeply devoted to her family. She especially looks up to Dad, and aspires to be a lobsterman just like him. Tess is also a firm believer in lucky objects, and has a sizeable collection of lucky charms that range from sea glass to shards of pottery. When the novel begins, Tess is determined to help Reverend Beal’s plan succeed to ensure the island school does not close down, because Tess loves the island and fears attending school on the mainland.
Tess vows to make Aaron feel at home so Aaron will want to stay, but over time, she comes to see Aaron apart from the plan. She comes to care for him as family, and wants him to be happy. She helps the community become aware of his musical...
