Summary
In Chapter 1, 11-year-old Tess Brooks and her five-year-old sister, Libby, rush down to meet the Bethsaida Island ferry that is bringing 13-year-old Aaron to live with them as a foster-sibling from the Maine mainland. The girls hope that Aaron will like them and the things they like to do. Tess reflects on the old saying, “Touch blue and your wish will come true,” and so she picks up a piece of blue sea glass. She also thinks about how Mom, a schoolteacher, reminded Tess to take things slow and easy with Aaron. Tess watches at the ferry draws near. Tess’s Dad, a lobsterman, is bringing Aaron across. As Tess and Libby get closer to the ferry, Tess touches the blue sea glass for good luck in the hopes that the plan will work.
