Summary

Twelve-year-old Maryanne finds her mother lying unconscious in one of the upstairs bathroom and rouses her father to call for help. When she gets to the hospital, she undergoes an emergency hysterectomy. Maryanne’s father, Fred, tells her to go to school the next morning. Maryanne’s mother survives.

Maryanne’s mother, Mary, was often absent during and after her surgeries, leading to a feeling of abandonment in her children.
