Summary

In Chapter 17, Lara’s family cannot work outside because of a storm. Lara, Maisie, and Nell spend the morning together. The girls ask about Lara’s story. Lara tells them that Pallace and Duke started sleeping together after she was injured. Lara still is unsure how it happened. In recounting the story, she wants her daughters to think she “was better” than she was (240).

Because Lara could not act, she started helping Cat in “the wardrobe department” (241). She and Cat became close. Meanwhile, Lara noticed changes in Duke’s behavior. Once she understood what Pallace and Duke had done, she “would finally understand” what she “had done to Veronica” (245).
